Alcohol

That old familiar friend… It’s available to you just about no matter where you go. It doesn’t judge you. It doesn’t blame you. It’s not going to put you down. It’s not going to tell you how to act or even what to wear. It’s just happy that you returned- Alcohol.

Jesus drank wine right? So it’s alright to drink, right? He turned water into wine, that was first act in revealing Himself. It was pretty spectacular really. John 2:1-11

Jesus was also known to hang around with some pretty wild people; a prostitute, drunks, tax collectors, lepers. All the kinds of riff-raff that most generally steered clear of in that day. Jesus was persecuted and questioned because of the company He kept by the Pharisees. So if He hung around all these kinds of people- the trouble makers if you will, wouldn’t He have been just like them?

“I am and my Father are one.” John 10:30

Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world…” John 18:36

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the spirit.” Ephesians 5:17-18

“Be careful, or your hearts will be weighted down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close in on you unexpectedly like a trap.” Luke 21:34

“Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothes your selves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.” Romans 13:13-14 (emphasis mine)
What we have above are some clear examples of Jesus’ opinions of drinking too much.

1: In speaking of Himself, He and the Father are one.

2: His kingdom isn’t of this world.

3: We are told not to be of this world (either) and allow our minds to be renewed by Jesus himself.

4: Getting wasted is foolish and leads to nothing good.

5: We can assume when reading the scripture in Luke that becoming weighted down by the anxieties of life can lead to over indulgence in alcohol. We are also told, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

6: Finally the scripture from Romans begins with, “Let us behave decently…” Doesn’t that just say it all? How rational of a mindset are you in when you’ve “had too much to drink?”

I am not here pointing a finger. Let me first just say that… I have been both on the receiving end of the destruction overindulgence in alcohol can cause and I was also on the side of dishing it out. I have been on both sides of the fence, so to say. First let me speak on behalf of children. Even if you are great and kind and wonderful with your children when you are drinking or even if they don’t see you drinking. There is still just this tension there until you are able to partake in your beverages. I know it. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it. Eventually kids figure out that they can’t say this or that to you because you’ll get mad or be moody. There is this walking on egg shells that begins to happen. It isn’t a passing phase so long as the over indulgence in present in their lives. It becomes a way for them to live and it lasts well into their adult years. I didn’t realize I was in that “mode” until I got myself some help. Christ held up a mirror to my face revealing all the damage that had been done. Without the Holy Spirit, I never would have known and by the time I realized something was broken down within me I had already made so many bad decisions because of the “survival” methods I had learned.
I mentioned above that I made a lot of bad decisions. Boy did I ever! Things I never would have done had I been sober. I’m talking life changing, life altering, life stifling decisions. Oh the possibilities had I not made these poor, poor decisions. I don’t think about them much now, as it would be sorely depressing and debilitating to do so. I have given all my mistakes and regrets to the Lord, as He is the only one strong enough to shoulder them. I was not in a clear frame of mind for the majority of my early 20’s. My new book Opening Doors outlines that. Much like the main character in the book I had wandered down a path that was leading to my own destruction.

I get it. I understand why folks drink. I certainly knew why I did. For one, it was just “normal.” It was what I saw. It was what I knew. If you had a bad day, sully yourself in a drink. If you were celebrating, have a drink. You made it to the end of the day without flipping out, have a drink. Whoops, you did flip out on someone- have a drink. I get it. It’s the social aspect. It’s the, I don’t wanna freaking be here- aspect. I hate my life. I’m happy. I’m sad. I’m angry. And eventually you just do it because it’s just what you do. Eventually you do it at all costs. Eventually it’s all that you have left.  I tend to wonder if that’s why in movies, the homeless person is most often shown to have a bottle of booze in his hand. And I wonder, is that would put him on the streets?

I was mad the first time I read some of these scriptures. Okay, mad isn’t the right word, I was pissed…. But I was so horribly offended because it was exactly what I needed to hear. I didn’t need to mess up my life any more than I already had and I certainly didn’t want to ruin any of the lives of those around me.

If you are struggling with alcohol and realize that you are in need of a change, please get help. Don’t try and do it on your own. It’s a tough battle, I’m not going to minimize it and say it isn’t. It’s a monster, really. That’s why I italicized part of that scripture in Romans, “and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.” It’s true, you can’t begin thinking about how to get your next drink or when to have it, you just simply have to set it down and not look back. Only the strength of Jesus Christ can help you do that.
I pray that this will be read by those of you who needed it just at the right time. God bless.

The plight of Lily

I’m not sure how to start this blog this morning other than sharing that it’s the cry of every loving parent’s heart. And I believe, especially a Mother’s heart, as that is the place I am speaking from.
Our little angel has been sleeping on my chest a lot for the last several days. As much as it melts my heart into unidentifiable pieces, it also breaks it too. Lily is sick again.
We are probably approaching 60 doctor’s visits. We have stood and watched as a doctor has stood over Lily, searching over her body for some kind of clue as to how to treat her for her newest- whatever it is. Less than 3 weeks ago it was bronchitis, which for her was highly risky, given her set of circumstances and lungs. If you are unaware, please read my previous blogs titled; “trisomy 9&12” and also, “the truth.”
Whenever faced with a new illness in Lily, my husband and I immediately go into this mode. We already know that even if it doesn’t last longer than a week, it is likely going to be a very long week. Lily requires above and beyond care while she is ill, as all children do. But Lily is an extreme child to begin with.
I have had few scattered moments of freedom. Lily has spent the majority of her time sleeping on me or just within my arms reach. She seems to have developed separation anxiety of some sort when she is ill. If I walk away to use the bathroom, get your ear plugs ladies and gentleman because it’s gonna get loud! My husband of course brings her comfort when she is ill and he’s quite good at it too. After all, that’s her daddy, receiving from him a love that no one else can give. Unfortunately, to no fault of his, while Lily is sick, anyone else’s comfort is briefly sufficient.
Amazingly, she hasn’t had much interest in drinking her milkies. She seems to have grown an interest in water. Thank God because the last time she was sick, she stopped eating and drinking all together for nearly 24 hours!
My husband and I have said and will probably continue to say that caring for Lily is more than a two parent job. My husband has been blessed enough to have been working part time the last 3 months thus giving him the freedom to just be Dad more easily. But he’s going to be going back to work fulltime soon. Which is good for us financially but is gonna make things more difficult at home.
Over the course of the last few days, Lily has had a high fever requiring Tylenol. The times that she needed the Tylenol, she threw it back up both times. Of course it was the one thing she needed at the time but she just doesn’t take medicine well. We did get her a new antibiotic which she seems to be handling well. This week, once again we got her into a new chiropractor, which as of right now seems to be working out pretty well. And I pray that it continues to. I pray that it helps with her acid reflux and the pressure on her cranium.
My husband and I both have not gotten much sleep, as most parents don’t during the course of having a sick child in the house. We do have an older child and even when she was little and sick, it wasn’t this intense.
Lily as wonderful as she is, we do understand has much cause to be such a grump all the time. While she doesn’t talk or communicate like most kids do by this age, she still does communicate in ways that we understand. A lot of our days are filled with Lily crying and grumbling most of the day. I’m not exaggerating, most all of the day… After about an hour straight of it, after doing all that you know to console her, your head begins to hurt really bad. I know while this is going on, I begin to wonder how on earth she can manage to carry on like this without stopping. One hour passes into two hours and sometimes more. We have talked to doctors about this. We have talked to specialists about this. The only help we have found is at the natural medicine doctor and the chiropractor.
This is something that we have just begun, again. We are seeing a different chiropractor, one which we believe we can add to Lily’s permanent care team.
The amount of attention that goes into prepping Lily’s morning bottles is a bit maddening. Now I know there are those little pill boxes that some folks have, labeled by the days of the week. Lily’s first two bottles of the day consist of; lacto-relief powdered milk with filtered bottled water, vitamin D, coconut oil and probiotics. Then, on the side, she gets an enzyme mixed with a G.I. revive. There is a lot that goes into getting our morning started around here.
If we can manage to, we try to sleep in until Lily gets up. But at least 5 days of the week, one of us gets up earlier to take our oldest daughter to school.
Lily is not real big on napping during the day. So there is little time for either one of us to just stop and take a breath or recharge our batteries. Fortunately, as of late, Lily has been sleeping through the night. Which, amazingly is still a new thing. She has napped quite a bit this week but mostly on my chest.
I am sure there are other parents out there at least kind of like us, we just haven’t met them yet. We don’t really have anybody to talk to about this stuff either that truly understands. We do know, however, that we still have a lot of people praying for us. Which we do still need a lot of prayer. It’s been a long year and we have accepted that it is probably going to be a long road ahead of us too.
I’ve written these things, as random as they may seem, hoping that someone who is struggling with parenthood or their special needs child- to know that they are not alone.
You gotta ask after some time passes what keeps two people going at what we like to call, brain melting speeds? Two scriptures come to mind.
Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the right time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Also, the parable of the ten talents. Matthew 25:14-30.
I want to be able to stand before God at the judgement throne and hear Him say, well done good and faithful servant! God has given us a very special gift in Lily. Though difficult most of the time and at times “brain melting” we realize that in order to care of Lily the way we should, we need to seek God, daily!

Opening doors, first chapter preview!

                 Arrival

Nothing really seemed to make sense. The sounds and sights only came to me in waves, as if I were moving in and out of consciousness. I looked up at the ceiling. White ceiling tiles, just like the ones you see in the hospital.  There were only a few things that I knew for sure at this point; I was in a hospital, I wasn’t wearing my own clothes and I don’t think anything was broken.
My vision was blurry but I could make out that I had tubes feeding me some kind of fluids into my right arm. I could hear beeping from the machine I was hooked up to and muffled whispers. There was an indescribable pain in my side and in my stomach, it felt as though someone had punched a hole right through me. Someone was holding my left hand, I tried to turn my head toward them, to look and see who it was but my head hurt so bad. It felt like a man’s touch. Whoever it was, they cared enough to stay with me. I felt comforted for a moment. I closed my eyes again to escape the pain. How did I get here? How did my life amount to this? Was I dying? God, how did I get here? Did I do this to myself? Thinking back on it now……
It all began when I moved to a new city, seeking a fresh start…
I always wanted to move to a bigger city. You could hear a pin drop in my little town outside of Madison, WI. It was silent in comparison to Chicago. The traffic was congested; honking horns, people yelling. The buildings climbed upward into the skyline further than I could see. The lights seemed to change from green to red in only a fraction of a second. No wonder I had already seen three accidents since I left the airport. Moving to a new town is always difficult, especially one as big as Chicago. It was scary and beautiful all at the same time.

The cab came to a screeching halt.

“Thirty five dollars ma’am,” said the cab driver.

“Ummm.” Fumbling through my purse, “here you go,”

He got out, grabbed my bags and threw them on the ground then drove off. I tried to scoop up all my bags in one shot so I didn’t have to make two trips. I stood in the corridor looking towards the top.

“This is gonna be awful! Six flights?” I began winding up the stairs when an old man came wandering out from his apartment. There he stood, in just his tighty whiteys holding his television remote. Looking quite proud of himself, he stood there for a moment and smiled. Oddly enough, he asked if I needed any help. I shook my head no and walked right past him. I was a little surprised to see a nearly naked middle-aged man greeting me upon my arrival.
I finally reached my apartment, where there was a note on the door from the property owner.
It read:

          Miss Venture,
Welcome! If you have any questions please feel free to call me anytime if you have any questions or concerns. Rent is due the first of the month no later………..

Well, you get the point.

I set my other bag down and tried to unlock the door.

“Aw, what the heck… wrong key?” I jiggled it a bit, it finally gave way then swung open.
Not exactly my idea of home but nothing a little cleaning and furniture couldn’t fix. I peered around the doorway to make sure I didn’t have any unwanted guests. The property owner did imply that it had not been rented in a while; oddly enough, I could smell the fresh paint on the walls.
The large bay windows in the living area really gave the old place some life. I could already imagine myself sitting on the window bench seat that over looked the city. The other rooms in the place were rather small and dark. The wood floors creaked when you walked over them.

I found a clean spot on the old white kitchen tile counter top to sit down. Next to me was a newspaper dated for yesterday, it must have been left here from the painter yesterday.

“Perfect!” I turned to the employment section and began my search. Just as I began scanning through there was a knock at the door. I looked through the peephole to see who it was.  It was that old guy again, this time he was fully clothed. I decided it was ok to open the door, seeing how he is properly dressed this time.

“Uh, hi! I’m Al. I just wanted to introduce myself; I’ve been here for twenty years,” he said sheepishly.

Al was a middle-aged man, who was balding on the top of his head. He was rather stout and disproportionate, he didn’t look as though he took very good care of himself and his small glasses were tightly pressed against his face. He seemed like a simple man, not very well dressed. Seeing that he was approaching me in a more appropriate manner I put out my hand.

“I’m Rachael, I just moved here from Wisconsin,”
He shook my hand loosely but with a smile.

“I do apologize for my behavior before. I knew someone was moving in today… and I, I have not had a neighbor in a long while. That’s all,” he stammered.

“Oh, well it’s nice to meet you.” I wasn’t quite sure what to say to this little man, who appeared to be a bit lonely.

“Well, I’ll let you get back to your unpacking; I live right down the hall. So, if you ever need anything just let me know,” he said as he scanned the room behind me.

“Thanks,” I pushed out a weary smile.

I shut the door as he walked away, I locked it just in case. It was a nice gesture but I don’t know anybody around here.
I went into my small bathroom and cleaned it vigorously. The bathroom was rather bright, even though it did not have a window in it. The bathtub itself was an antique, it was one of those old claw foot tubs, and I absolutely loved it! It sat so carefully on four tiny little legs in the middle of the bathroom. You could see where the tub had sat for many years before; there were four large imprints in the floor beneath it.

I looked in the mirror just to see how badly the day’s events had treated me. I twisted my dark brown hair in a knot and pegged it to the top of my head. Revealing how much my blonde highlights had grown out. I stood there studying the darkened circles around my still, amazingly bright blue eyes. I looked down at my dirty clothes from having traveled and moved all day and shook my head. I tugged at the corner of my t-shirt that no longer fit my petite frame, as I had lost ten pounds recently. My shoes looked tired and ready to make their home in a nearby dumpster. My pants spattered with paint and car grease. I closed my eyes for just a moment and thought about how good it feels to be in clean clothes. Thus motivating me to hang in there a little longer, just enough to have a warm bath.

I walked out into the living room and grabbed the newspaper I had found and drew up a bath. Once I got in, I slid down the wall of the tub into the water. I took a moment to be thankful that I made it safely to Chicago. Even though I was having a moment of pure relaxation, the noise outside wasn’t any bother. It was already becoming a sound of comfort. Reminding me, I was at my new home. I was proud of myself for having decided to move. My family thought I was a little crazy for driving down to Florida by myself, now they just think I’m nuts! I didn’t really miss my quiet little town back home, yet. I was sure I was going to miss my family at some point, but Wisconsin isn’t very far away.
I sat back up so I could begin scanning the paper again.

Part time: days- website design, inquire by phone. Some experience needed, portfolios preferred.
Perfect daytime job. “Circle that. Now for night time.” Waitress: $2.45 plus tips. “Nope, not enough,” Bartender: country club setting, $5.50 payroll. Spit tips. “No, no, no… wait a minute.” Something caught my eye. Wanted: bartender, license required. Ten dollars cash, plus tips. Fast paced Irish pub. The Closed door, 121 Division St. The closed door, I wonder why it’s called that? I hope it’s not clubby, lines and V.I.P lists. I don’t want to deal with that. I circled and stared it and threw the paper on the ground next to the tub. I slid down the back of the tub again and soaked for what seemed like an eternity. Before I knew it, I had transformed into what looked like an eighty-year-old woman. I had more wrinkles than my grandma did. I quickly got out and threw on my towel.

I walked over to the bay window that over looked the street. My apartment looked like a shoebox compared to what I could see in the distance. The Chicago skyline was amazing. Every building was covered in sheets of glass and adorned with at least one tiny little red light on every rooftop. Outside the streets were filled with busy people. I hadn’t really seen anything like it. Madison was a busy place, but this was different. It was new.

It was the brink of spring; everything was finally turning green again. Here everyone looked like they were in such a rush to get nowhere, really. Maybe it was because I had nowhere to go, no one to meet. At least I didn’t yet. It was so noisy compared to home. I always felt so restricted at home, here there just looked like there is so much opportunity to be had. I had big ideas in a little city and nowhere to go with them. I always had this feeling that there was something else out there for me. Chicago stood out on the map for me; something brought me here, I just had to figure out what it was.
The breeze that came in through the windows was still a little crisp. I was on my own for the first time in my life. Truthfully, I was scared out of my mind, at the same time it was quite liberating. The massive skyline in itself was quite intimidating. Yet, I was determined to have a life on my own, make some new friends and just live. I have never lived on my own before.

My mother always taught me to be careful. Look after your drinks when you go out. Don’t give strangers your address. Having some good common sense could come in handy when you don’t know anybody.
Whenever she and I would go out for a drink, she would always comment on men staring at me, I could not understand why. I don’t have a low self-esteem; I just don’t think that I am any different from other women as far as looks are concerned. I stand about five foot three, rather short if you ask me. About one hundred and fifteen pounds, good enough size chest. Mom always insisted that the boob fairy skipped her crib but not mine. I cannot help but laugh to myself thinking of her saying this to me.

She always had told me I have a lot to offer a man; on the other hand, there is a lot about me that would scare a man off. I guess its intimidating meeting a woman like me. I can fix my own car; I know I’m intelligent and I’m not painful on the eyes. I’m not arrogant or anything but, I know I’m not hideous. In addition, considering I know more about cars than most of the guys I dated, I would say it is intimidating. I go out on a first date, he gets a flat, and I’m the first one hauling out the jack and the doughnut tire? Tell me what is wrong with that picture? We’re not going out on a second date! You should at least know how to change a tire or jump your car, that’s standard man protocol.

Tomorrow I have to look my best, I have to dress to impress. I’m getting up early to go out to find a job. It should not be too hard considering I’m pretty much a jack-of-all-trades. If I’m trained well enough, I can do most anything. I’m not sure yet, what I want, although that bartender ad caught my eye. I’ve always thought about being a bartender; it would be a great way to meet people and fast. I want to have some fun before I settle into a career. It was time to get some rest. I had a long day of travel behind me and a big day of job searching to do tomorrow.

I lie there encircled in this old familiar gray haze. Unfortunately, this has been in my life long enough that it has come to be a bit of a comfort blanket to me. I watch it dance in the little bit of moonlight that is making its way through the big bay window. It’s my most disgusting habit, when I’m nervous or maybe drinking. Come to think of it, I can find time to smoke always. Cigarette after cigarette, I’m not a chain smoker or anything; I’ve actually grown to hate the little things. You know what? They’re always there. Where ever I go, if I’m alone or with people. As I lay there watching this cloud of comfort waft across the room I come to realize how exhausted I really should be. I’m not, I just can’t sleep knowing that just outside these walls is a completely different world I do not know. My mind just will not shut off, I am just too excited. I quickly swat my hand into the air to watch as the cloud drifts away. I could stay up the rest of the night dreaming up elaborate fantasies as to what great things this new city will bring into my life. Instead, I have to opt to get some sleep and begin living it.

I awoke to find myself being able to begin a new day, in a new world. Waking to silence would be like waking to find that you’ve struck it rich overnight.

“What is that? What is that noise?” The awful noise shot me clear out of bed.

I threw my window open and looked down toward the ground. Some idiot drove his car into a pole hit several other cars and set the alarms off on all of them.
“What a way to start out the day,” I muttered to myself as I rifled through my bag looking for some job friendly clothes.

I never was much for dress to impress. Not really a fashion slave. My wardrobe consisted of expensive jeans; skate supportive t-shirts, tank tops, a dress or two and board shoes.
“Eh, this’ll do,” throwing my selection on the air mattress.

I walked quickly down the hallway, as not to be seen. Al seemed as though he means well but I don’t think I’m ready to deal with him yet today. I stepped outside and lit my first cigarette of the day. That was usually the only cigarette I liked.

I walked to the corner where I had noticed a diner the day before. Rosie’s café, it sounds quaint. I went in and sat down in the smoking section along with every other paying customer in the entire restaurant. It looked like a fifties diner. Over the speakers, I heard Buddy holly playing. The floors hadn’t been re-done in probably fifty years. There were pieces of the ceiling tiles that had been replaced, the rest were brown from all of the smoke residue. The food sure did look good; I passed by a few people who had already gotten their breakfasts. Sometimes these kinds of places were the best to eat.

I looked over the menu, scrambled eggs, bacon, and white toast. Something with caffeine, I thought to myself. A diet coke. Now, I’ll be able to think on my toes, brain food. The waitress came over, took my order, and walked away. I sat quietly looking out the window. Watching all the people walking by. What an interesting city, huge skyscrapers. Constant honking of horns, the occasional, “Hey, buddy, get outta the road!” Being shouted out of some cabby’s window.

The waitress returned with my food, set it down in front of me, and broke off my trance.

“Say, do you know where I could get a map? Jo?” I asked as I glanced at her nametag.

“Actually, there is a 7- eleven across the street, he should have maps there.”

“Well, where you looking to go? I might be able to give you directions; I know this city like the back of my hand.” Jo offered.

I reached into my purse and grabbed out the ad from the paper. “121 Division St. The Closed Door.”

Jo looked as though she had been running the waitress circuit all of her life. The years were not kind to her, you could see in the lines of time printed carefully all over her face. When she spoke, one would get the idea that Jo smoked four packs of cigarettes a day. Her honey colored hair was stricken with grey and white, tied back in a sloppy bun fashion. You could see in her faded brown eyes that the woman had worked hard all of her life and wanted nothing more than a break.

“Oh yea, sure. When you pay for your bill, I can write down the directions…where ya from anyway honey?” Jo asked.

“Well, I just moved here yesterday from…” I began.

“Well, you don’t wanna go telling everybody that, they’ll take ya for what yer worth,” she quickly interrupted. “I gotta go, my next orders up, you see me for those directions before you leave and enjoy your breakfast,” She spit out nearly in one breath.

I ate my breakfast and tried to picture what The Closed Door was like; at this point, I did not want to leave anything to my imagination.

The slow unraveling of faith...

The slow unraveling of faith…

I am going to press a spiritual hot button because I think it needs to be done and because I’ve been there. Read on if you’ve got the stomach and heart for it.

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

This is what Jesus has told us of this life we live… It sounds to be a bit of an understatement when you pan over the struggles of your life, doesn’t it?  On Earth; in our lifetime, maybe on a daily basis, we experience; loss, sorrow, pain, frustration, hunger, anger, fear, confusion, brutal attack…. The list could go on forever. And I can only speak on behalf of myself here.

Let me set this up by saying that today, when you woke up, you awoke amidst a world- wide battle.( I'm not talking about the horror you see and hear on the news)  The moment you were conceived in your mother’s womb, you entered into enemy territory. Now I know you didn’t ask to be born. None of us did but now that we have options we can make the best decisions possible to thrive and survive. You can choose to either be tossed about by every wave of difficulty or you can be aware of it and fight back!

You may be reading this thinking I’m crazy but quite frankly, I don’t care if you think I’m nuts… I know that this, is the truth. There is more going on around you than you’re aware of. There is more going on around you than you can see.

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle isn’t against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:11-12
This is a serious warning. Read it again…
When something is bad you warn your family and friends, right? Or if you go to a restaurant and every time you go, you get food poisoning? You would warn those you love, wouldn’t you? Or if someone you knew was going to buy something that was a piece of junk. Or do something that would bring harm to them? You would have the heart to tell them, wouldn’t you? I hope you get my point… I’m not trying to be all doom’s day here. I’m not trying to scare you. But I want to re-direct you back to this warning in the bible.

Jesus warns that we will have trouble in this world. There seems to be no way to avoid it. Things are going to happen, it’s inevitable. But… We can turn to Him in our time of need because He already has overcome the world. What does “overcoming the world mean?”

How many people do you know that died and rose back to life three days later? How many people do you know raised others back to life? How many people do you know that made the blind see again or the paralyzed and crippled walk again?  If we are on enemy lands, and Jesus who once walked this earth, repeatedly healed and made whole the sick and even the dead- in enemy territory, who won the battle? Who won the overall battle?

“And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” Colossians 2:15

He accomplished the one thing none of us were capable of doing. Triumphing over the evil forces of this world. The battle has been won. The devil has been defeated. Jesus died for you and for me!
But why don’t we see a victory? Why are all these things still so far from perfect? From peaceful? Far from love? We are still in enemy territory. We’ll get our plane ticket out of here when Jesus returns or when you reach your final destination, hopefully it will be the destination with Christ in heaven.
Two scriptures I read in James I think are best suited for this entry today.
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this; to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27 (emphasis mine)
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.” James 4:7-8

I felt led to both of these scriptures to share here because they are a key, I believe. If we are in enemy territory, our earth and we allow ourselves to get so wrapped up in the things around us it does become a poison to us. Also, when tempted to turn to worldly things, we are encouraged to resist them and turn toward God.

I’ve wanted to cave in. I can’t tell you how many times over the last year, especially, that I have wanted to throw in the towel and just check out. I’m not talking about suicide. But if you’ve gone through recovery of any kind, you know what I’m talking about here. It has been tempting to just neglect responsibilities; be wreck less, have a break down or ten, not get out of bed, or give into whatever the devil is pushing you towards. But there has always been a very quiet voice, a gentle push back into the right direction. Encouragement in my spirit that re-directs me back to where I need to be. That re-direction…? Hit the floor. Get down on my knees and pray. That’s always been a good place for me to start when my flesh is feeling anxious and I can’t take the weight of it all anymore. Jesus often went off to secluded places to pray to the Father all the time. He stayed connected to the source. Why do you think we get so distracted? How connected to the source are we?

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Mark 1:35

Jesus has been the only one in history to have been victorious when He walked this earth. He is the only one who figured out and did navigate His way through this life, the right way. That is the man I want to follow. Those are the footsteps I want to walk in. I know I am greatly opposed because I am in this world. By faith I will walk behind Him because there is no one else who died and three days later arose from the dead and was able to share His story, no one.

A bit more hope and peace of mind:
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
I pray that this entry has served to reignite that fire for recognizing and standing against the dark forces of this world and reminded you to turn back to the only one who knows how to fight against it, our savior, Jesus.

The pursuit of playdom

                                                            The pursuit of playdom.

I remember when I was a little girl, playing was incorporated into everything that I did, naturally. As a child that was naturally where my thoughts went- how I could play with this and that of my surroundings. Remember how easy it was to play and quickly get whisked off into a different world comprised of make believe and wonder? In my early twenties, I think I still knew how to play. They were just more adult games, like darts or pool or poker. I still knew how to kick back and relax back then too.
Now that I’m in my early 30’s, when I wake up in the morning, my mind is flooded with the tasks that need to be carried out for the day. All of the needs of others that need to be fulfilled. There are some days that when my head hits the pillow at night, that even though everything got done that day, I still feel as though nothing got done. I’ve begun to think it’s because there was no play time. There was no fun involved. Maybe a few moments on the phone, playing some time waster game- just to take the edge off the day, momentarily. Other than that, where did all the fun go?

There is a pulse to our nation that can be heard in nearly every commercial; media outlet, schools and just about anywhere else. Strive. Succeed. Don’t stop. Keep pushing. Keep planning. Keep working. Don’t rest. This is where all the play has gone. The idea has been knocked off the drawing board of the adult life and replaced with endless striving. There is a book in the Bible that speaks about all the things of life, Ecclesiastes. The first time I read it, I thought it was really depressing. But then the next time I read it, I felt the Lord open my eyes to the real point behind it all. That life is meaningless without God.

God is the author of all things, whether it is work or it is play. You can see the nature of our Creator in all things. Although we are the only ones made in His image.
“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” Ecc 1:14
“Naked a man comes from his mother’s womb, and as he comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand.” Ecc 5:15

I am not suggesting lazy-ness either, I am suggesting not so much busyness. Busyness keeps our sight off of what is most important; God and our families. Growing in love and in relationship with both. Having fun together. Playing. Living rather than just surviving and striving.

We can’t achieve our way into approval from God. There are days where we are going to fall miserably short of God’s glory, that is every day but that is what we have Jesus Christ for. We will all stand before the judgment seat of God, whether you believe that or not. I will not stand there and explain away all the things that I did in this life and all the things that I had. All the money I had in the bank, all the awards I won and how respected or feared I may have been. I want to stand there and tell Him that I loved my family with every ounce of love He filled my heart with. And on the days I felt myself slipping, I turned to His Son for my strength to go on. That is what I hope to take with me when I depart.

If you sit and look out your window on a fall or spring day and watch the squirrels you will see a wonderful example of work and play. Squirrels are usually hard at work; collecting, gathering, building. But in the midst of it all, they play. You see them chasing one another up and down trees, from limb to limb. Or what about dogs? Who do you think it is that gave your dog a mind to play fetch? Or what causes the birds to rejoice after a warm spring rain? I can see outside my window, even though it is bitter cold, squirrels playing. And when the wind picks up, I can see them cuddling together for warmth in their tree top nests.

Some would argue that animals are almost “programmed” to be this way or that it’s just their nature. That may be true but maybe they are the smarter ones for not replacing the original program. Do you think we were always supposed to strive unto death? Until we are thread bare and white knuckled? Why do you suppose more and more people need sleeping pills just to sleep? Or depression medication? There is something going on here that we are all ignoring- this life we are leading, the one we are pushed to lead due to our environments and our newly programmed mindsets, is taking away from what matters most. The thing that gives us peace. God. Family. And some good old fashioned fun.
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” Genesis 2:2-3.

I don’t think God rested because He was tired… He rested because He knows how important resting is. It’s an example and outline set forth for us to follow. We need to rest too. We also need to play. It is in our nature, remember, you played as a child. You ARE still the person you were as a child, you’re just older now and your playdom has been stolen by all of your tasks and endless striving. Find that person again. He or she is still in there. Don’t think about how silly you will look, playing. Just go where your heart leads you. Play in a way that of course wouldn’t be harmful to others or displeasing to God. Or if that’s too big of a step, then just be still…
Good luck finding your way back to playdom, your inner child will be there waiting for you…

Where I end and where you begin...

Where I end and where you begin

Marriage… For some that’s almost a loaded word. Unfortunately, marriages have been left open for a lack of respect; infidelity, abuse, or just not realizing and respecting the magnitude with which marriage is to be taken seriously. I can fully understand why the word marriage would be a hit below the belt for some.

Marriage can truly be a beautiful thing. It can be an amazing thing. But no one ever said it was going to be easy. Even Paul warned: “But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.”(1 Corinthians 7:28)  Stern warning, right? Absolutely, even more so if you don’t intend on doing marriage God’s way. Read all of 1 Corinthians 7:28-34. Which leads us to 1 Corinthians 7:35, this is where I want to go with this. “I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.”

I will write from the view point of a woman, as it is easiest for me. Ha… Let me set this all up by saying I am not a model citizen (you chuckled if you know me). Our marriage is not perfect but I do believe that my husband and I have something of a rare quality. We recognize that we (ourselves) are not number one. First and foremost, is God, secondly, each other. This is the relationship we are called to pour ourselves into. This is the earthly relationship that is to be sacred. There is no man other than my husband. Nor is that concept even a possibility. There are too many options couples unfortunately leave on the table when entering into a marriage. The possibility of leaving or divorce. The twisted ideology that a man is to rule over a woman (in a brute, harmful way). The idea of living completely separate lives. A marriage of convenience. None of this is marriage. Not as it was intended at least. There is a mutual dance that was set afire when God created marriage. It was meant to be beautiful; deep, personal and lifelong.

I have grown very passionate about the subject matter of marriage. It means something completely different to me than it had. I once had a worldly view of marriage too. I am grateful that the Lord opened my eyes to the truth.

Alright, let’s crack open an often twisted and misunderstood scripture about marriage and a wife’s role. I think I’m ready for this…
“Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.”
Let’s read on: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” Ephesians 5:22-28 (emphasis mine)
Alright, let’s look at this in context. This is not sexist, as some may think. I have no problem “submitting” to my husband because he regards me as a part of himself. And-because he follows the Lord’s leading in his life, his intentions aren’t impure nor displeasing. My husband isn’t reckless with our life. Once we said our wedding vows, my life and his life were merged, we became one- just as we are called to in the bible. That a man would leave his parents and join with his wife to become one. We are also called to take care of our bodies because they are God’s temple. (1 cor 3:16, 6:19) Therefore, if we are treating each other as we should and treating our bodies as we should where is the fear coming from? Here is another scripture to set things into place too. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interest of others.” Philippians 2:3-4
Some women would contend that they would have no power or say over anything in their life. I know I used to think that way until I understood the scriptures right. What do you want the power to do anyhow? Ask yourself that if you’re struggling with these scriptures. The only thing you truly have control over is your attitude. If the plans you make for your life as a married couple aren’t a part of God’s plan or will, those plans will be thwarted. “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
A husband has a tall order and a wife has no small feat either. In this world our natural inclination is to just take care of ourselves and look out for our own interests. It’s like a default setting. A man must love his wife like Christ loved the church (all the people, not the building) Christ died for all His people, the church. That was the ultimate sacrifice. Husbands are being called to love their wives with the same kind of intense resolve. The kind of – I will stop at nothing and do whatever it takes to love my wife. A wife that is dearly loved, adored and cherished is a beautiful thing. That is a means for motivation as well. It motivates a woman to hold up her end of her responsibilities in a marriage.
Wives are also called to respect their husbands and submit to them. Respect your man for what he does for you. Respect your husband for going to work each day. Respect your husband for all of the little things he does that either you are incapable of doing or just don’t like to do, you know, the manly type stuff. There isn’t much else in this world that makes a man feel like a man when it is evident that he is respected by his wife. Now that, is something to go home to each night! Also, trust in the Lord that the direction your husband wants to take for your home has been well thought out and taken to the Lord in prayer. Both of you should take it to the Lord in prayer. With that as a baseline, both what husband and wife are supposed to be doing, what they are supposed to be to each other and how they are to act- that’s a pretty good start.
All too often we take each other for granted, as though they are always going to be there. Now we are called to always be there but that doesn’t mean you should take a person for granted. Love is the staying power. Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all you mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it; love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39
How much more do you suppose we are called to love our spouse if we are asked to also love our neighbor as ourselves? Loving God and doing what is pleasing in His eyes is number one. There is NOTHING that escapes His view. That in itself is a good remedy to keep a clear conscience. We get our love for one another from God. It is because He loved us first that we are capable of loving one another. This is why it is important to maintain an open, devoted and loving relationship with our Father.
If each of us is doing what we’re supposed to be doing in a marriage we should be good, right? As in, everything is hunky dorey, right? Heck no… not in this world. It’s hard work. But the best work you will ever do! It is a masterpiece worth fighting for. I think that was one of the supporting factors to Paul’s warning. Here is a major factor in why, “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12). “For where two or three come together in my name, there I am with them” (Matthew 18:20). The reason why I led us here is because this is where the trouble comes in. These scriptures in regard to marriage are fighting words for the evil one. These two scriptures are the definition of unity, oneness, closeness. Our enemy doesn’t want anything of the sort for us. If it were solely up to him, married couples would just be feuding all the time. Here’s a couple scriptures to get a good idea of his nature.
I know I’m jumping around a little bit but stay with me, this is so rich… “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him…..” 1 Peter 5:8-9
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” John 10:10

What can we gather from all of this? First of all, the devil is real. He’s not the red guy with horns and a pitch fork but he is indeed real, the scriptures say so. (Isaiah 14) Second, the greatest lie the devil ever told was that he isn’t real. (some variation of that was in the usual suspects, origin unknown otherwise) So, if there is no enemy to defeat or stand guard against, what threat is there on your life; marriage, or even the well-being of your children? That’s a pretty twisted and cunning lie then, isn’t it? But, if you know the truth you have more than a fighting chance. Without it, you will fall into the worldly thrum of life.

We have to be careful not to fall into the devil’s traps and fall for his disguises. He is the master of deception. It is what he has prided himself upon. The world is filled with temptation. If you seek God and seek godly council you will know the difference between what is pleasing to God and what isn’t. There is a very thick line between right and wrong here.  Keeping God at the center, living right and honoring your marriage vows you will have more hope than most. Not letting go of that first and foremost strand, this is a huge key to it all. Praying together for your lives; marriage and family, the Lord will be present. Recognizing the devil’s ploys to get you both fighting against each other rather than standing in arms together. A marriage united is power! That is one of the reasons why it was meant to be so sacred. Unfortunately, it has been made cheap and disposable by the world. It has been taken too lightly and it has been abused and damaged. I know all too personally, I fell into that worldly trap myself when I was in my mid-twenties. I made my amends to God for my ignorance and disregard for what He had intended. I am very blessed that I was allowed a second chance and have been blessed with a wonderful husband now and a marriage we both take to heart and both fight for.

In conclusion, if within our marriage, we come to God together- a cord of 3 strands is not easily broken. Your marriage will be stronger with God as the center point. He has the power to change, heal and restore. He has the power to keep you on track in your marriage and keep your intentions pure. Your marriage is greatly opposed by the enemy because it holds a power he doesn’t have. Even with all of your struggles and trials, if at the end of the day both of you can take a quiet few moments and pray together, the Lord will be there with you. And that, is quite the threat to our enemy. Because as you know, the overall battle is won but the daily battles still rage on. One way to knock down those daily battles is to stay united. Stay on the right side of the fence. Know your roll in your marriage, know your boundaries. Your marriage isn’t a place to push on boundary lines. Your marriage is the most important asset you have, next to your relationship with God.  Take the scriptures for what they are, in proper context. Marriage isn’t about power. It’s about unity if you’re living it right together. It is two minds working as one. Two bodies being one. What more a beautiful thing can there be? Go back and read the first pages in genesis about Adam and Eve. Marriage should make more sense. If you’re approaching marriage with the right mind set, there should be no sense of where your husband ends and where you begin.
